CINDERELLA
MAN
For many moviegoers - especially younger
ones - it may seem impossible to believe
that, not so very long ago, the Great Depression
crushed the spirit out of the Common Man
and that one man found the strength and
the courage to inspire millions of others.
"Cinderella Man" is the true story
of Jim Braddock, a working class boxer whose
successful career comes crashing to an end
when he breaks his right hand at the beginning
of the Depression. Despite his injured hand,
he's forced to take low-paying fights in
clubs just to survive. Desperately in need
of money, Braddock gratefully accepts the
offer of a heavyweight bout. Amazingly,
he wins and begins the painful steps to
a long overdue comeback that will eventually
lead to a title fight with the heavyweight
champion of the world! Oscar-winner Russell
Crowe makes Braddock a simple, decent man
who becomes a working class hero to millions,
in a thrilling and ultimately inspiring
movie that easily knocks out 5 tickets out
of 5 on the Mr. Movie Scale.
2 hours and 24 minutes Rated PG-13 for boxing
violence and some language, but should be
suitable for all but the youngest filmlovers.
RAY
Ray Charles was a genius. As a seven year-old
child, he saw his brother drown in a tub
of water, shortly before blindness overtook
him. His musical blending of gospel and
blues was unique. While the film tends to
clean up the number of illegitimate children
and mistresses he had, the overall effort
is a fitting tribute to the man who broke
so many color barriers on the way to creating
a timeless legacy of music. As Ray, Jamie
Foxx captures the quirks and the style of
the Jazz great, in an Oscar-winning performance.
NOTE: Parents are strongly warned that "Ray"
has many adult-themed scenes, so approach
this PG-13 rated biopic at your own risk.
Grownups should be pleased enough for 4
tickets out of 5 on the Mr. Movie Scale.
