Steve Friedman, Mr. MovieSubaru DRIVE Magazine Features Mr. Movie

NOT YOUR ORDINARY MOVIE BUFF, STEVE FRIEDMAN – DUBBED “MR. MOVIE” – HOSTS THE LONGEST CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING, ALL-MOVIE TALK SHOW IN THE COUNTRY WITH LISTENERS IN 38 STATES AND CANADA. HE BROADCASTS FROM 1210 AM IN PHILADELPHIA.

For nearly 25 years, Steve Friedman has fielded questions about every kind of film from different eras and genres, and he’s known for his encyclopedic recall of all that he’s seen – including the credits. Friedman also teaches writing and film criticism, writes scripts, and reviews films. He’s lectured at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and has appeared in several specials on A&E’s The History Channel. He’s even won an Emmy® Award.

Friedman also readily recalls details of the many Subaru vehicles he’s owned, beginning with a metallic blue Subaru XT Coupe in 1986. “It was gorgeous and looked just like a rocket,” he said. “In 1989, my wife and I bought brand-new matching XT Coupes on the same night. Michell’s was red, and mine was white with blue racing stripes.”

“Even today, after all these years, I still associate warm feelings and security with going to the movies with my family.”

Today, as a production designer for film and television, Michell uses her Outback to haul everything from life-size mummy cases to wagonloads of aliens.

Steve Friedman talked about how his father influenced his passion for movies. “He loved to take us all to the drive-in. Even today, after all these years, I still associate warm feelings and security with going to the movies with my family.”

“We’re planning our first drive-in adventure with our 15-year old daughter, Darragh. The Majestic in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the only drive-in theatre in the area. It’s nearly 100 miles away, but believe me, it will be worth it to recapture this wonderful experience with my own family.”

This article appeared in the Summer 2007 issue of DRIVE, the Subaru owner magazine, and is reprinted with permission from Subaru of America, Inc.

The National Kidney Foundation's Evening at the Movies

On June 19th, 2006, our own Steve Friedman, aka "Mr. Movie," hosted a black-tie charity event at the Prince Theatre in downtown Philadelphia, PA. The event raised a great deal of money for the National Kidney Foundation. But, even more importantly, it also raised awareness about the rise of Kidney Disease in this country. Currently, one out of every nine people are affected by the disease and, within ten years, it will effect one out of every six people! On a lighter note, Steve showed clips from films shot in and taking place in the Philadelphia area, including Rocky, Philadelphia, National Treasure and In Her Shoes, plus dozens of other, less well-known titles. Dozens of movie buffs interacted with Steve, who also took questions and got into lively discussions with many of his fans. The outpouring of affection was mutual and, according to Steve, "We also got the word out about Kidney Disease... by going to NKFDV.ORG folks can get themselves and every member of their family screened for Kidney Disease absolutely free! That alone makes this whole event worthwhile to me!"

"Steve Friedman's gifts as a broadcaster include amazing knowledge and boundless enthusiasm. He is compulsively listenable, which is why people three and four states away tune him in. I have been on a lot of talk shows, and Steve's is the one where it felt most like a conversation between two people who spoke the same language, and shared the same love for the movies."

Family Safe Films for All Generations

One of the challenges I face, as a Movie Critic and Film Talk Show host, is hearing frustrated Parents and Grand-Parents complain about the lack of good, quality entertainment to share with their families. They are frustrated by the time lost searching through large selections of films in their local Video/DVD stores and finding that, once again, they are drawn to the same lists of movies that they have seen over and over again. In truth, there are so many classic films that are very interesting to share together but require an open mind and a little bit of guidance from the perspective that these films will be safe for everyone to watch!

The Classic Family Film Playdate is a great way for Families to get together for the purpose of enjoying a wonderful evening. Do this over and over again and take advantage of the Film list I have chosen for your fun movie night. Every film on the list is guaranteed to be entertaining and absolutely safe for the whole family.
